Enlargement (Augmentation)
INDICATIONS
Smaller than desired breasts
Breast asymmetry
INTENDED RESULT
Larger and more shapely breasts
A more balanced figure and positive self-image
PROCEDURE DESCRIPTION
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with sedation.
A small incision is made under the breast, around the edge of the areola (nipple) or in the armpit, and an implant is usually inserted under the breast tissue and pectoralis muscle.
Other procedures that may enhance the result:
• Breast lift (mastopexy) for lost breast volume
RECUPERATION AND HEALING
The patient goes home in a bra and ace wrap, which helps hold the breasts in the correct position.
Initial discomfort is almost always controlled with oral pain medications.
Sutures are usually removed in 7 to 14 days.
Light activities can be resumed as tolerated. Aerobic activities or intimate contact can be resumed in a few weeks as healing progresses.
Incision lines typically will continue to fade over the next year.
INSURANCE GUIDELINES
Breast enlargement is usually considered a cosmetic procedure and is not covered by insurance. The patient is responsible for payment.
